I was with a group of former co-employees of PASAR Corp. and some special guests in a guided tour of the only copper smelter in the Philippines last Saturday.

It's been quite some time since I was inside the premises of the smelter. So on that day, many of us inside the bus were pleasantly surprised and awed by the positive changes inside the copper smelting plant.

Sinulog 2010 - Memories of a Festival in Isabel

Sinulog 2010 festival, was recently held in the town of Isabel, Leyte, in honor of the Seňor Santo Niňo.

Similar celebrations were also held in various other towns all over the Philippines (whose patron saint is the child Jesus or Seňor Santo Niňo) in the first month of the year.

The most popular of these festivals is in the City of Cebu.
However, compared to the one in Cebu in terms of the number of attendance and participants, the sinulog held in Isabel annually is minuscule.

But I have no complaints. Actually, it's good enough for me.

The way I see it, I don't have to worry about being victimized by pickpockets and endure congestion due to heavy traffic like what many visitors must have gone through in Cebu recently.

First time I met this down-to-earth priest, I thought he was the maintenance guy.

Our Marriage Encounter group held a recollection months ago in the Augustinian Monastery, in Biasong, Merida, Leyte.

Their monastery is perched on a hill and the scenery somehow has a serene effect on your senses.

He approached Father Renan, who was the facilitator of our recollection, and me during a break.
He wore a white t-shirt, loose trousers and slippers.

Then Father Renan introduced him and that's how I came to know Father Libby Daňos.

The Santa Rita Training Center is Father Libby's brainchild. He plans to train the youth in automotive mechanics and produce not only qualified automotive servicemen but also future leaders.
Leadership training, by the way, is part of the curriculum, he says.

All the materials he needed for the project were donated by kind-hearted citizens. The training equipments came all the way from Italy and I was fortunate enough to meet Nino, the Italian volunteer who installed them inside the training building.

Last week, our whole family went on a trip to Kuting Reef in Southern Leyte.
We made a stopover in Maasin City for lunch and parked in the city plaza just across the Catholic church.

After we had our fill of fried chicken and rice courtesy of Jollibee, we went on our way farther south.

But not before I took a couple of shots of their beautiful church.

Kuting Reef is in Southern Leyte. It is located in a private cove with a beach awash with fine pebbles. This beach resort is within a 3-hectare property and it has plenty of tall coconut trees planted amid bermuda grass-covered gounds.

The ambiance gives you a relaxed, calm feeling during your whole stay.
It definitely is a good place to travel to and enjoy bonding moments with your whole family.

I should know, because I was there a few days ago with my family for an overnight visit.

The staff is friendly and give prompt service. The whole place is nice and clean.
Bottom line? The whole place is worth checking out.

I took some digital photos of the sunset yesterday during a lazy Sunday afternoon of family fun and bonding at the Sabin Resort Hotel which is a few minutes' drive from downtown Ormoc City. It also happened to be my nephew's birthday. We had lunch at the hotel's poolside and engaged in chitchat afterward while the children frolicked in the swimming pool.

Later, I positioned my chair facing out to sea and wait with my camera, ready to take photos of the magic moments when the clouds deflect the rays of the sun in different directions and produce an amazing view of the afternoon sky.

The town of Isabel recently celebrated the feast of the Sto. Niño last January 15 and one of the highlights was the Sinulog Mardi Gras.

The heavens must have given its blessings and manifested its cooperation by allowing some cloud cover during the event and thereby sparing the participants and spectators alike from getting sunburned.

All in all, the Sinulog festival was a success.

Beggars--Harassing Passengers at the Tacloban Airport

I was at the Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport in Tacloban early Tuesday morning with my siblings and their kids to meet two of my other siblings who were on the morning PAL flight from Manila.

A few minutes after we found a nice, suitable place in the parking area, a couple of street kids came over and asked for coins; they were about ten years old, more or less, and since it is the holiday season, I gave each of them a one peso coin.

Wrong move.

Because ten to fifteen minutes later, their companions materialized like sharks homing in on their prey.

Each one of them begged for coins and they wouldn't take no for an answer.
My sister gave them Fita Bisquits instead and threatened to call the cops if they try to push their luck.
So, they did an about-face and crowded around other arriving passengers.

As I watched these street children begging, the thought crossed my mind, like, these beggars could morph into prostitutes, pickpockets, thieves, and bank robbers in the future if the Department of Social Welfare and other well-meaning organizations don't do something about the situation.

Faith, Hope and Prayer- A Miracle in Ormoc with Father Suarez

The faithful came for healing from as far north as Samar and as far south as Maasin. The unfaithful, too, came over as well as the believers and non-believers(the latter probably came over out of curiosity)
They came from all walks of life...the rich, the not so rich, the poor and the feeling rich. They had among them an array of ailments such as heart disease, cancer,arthritis,diabetes,stroke, etc. They all converged and hoped to get healed by the power of the Holy Spirit through the healing hands of Father Fernando Suarez inside the Ormoc Superdome last Thursday, the 25th of September 2008.

The strength of their faith drove them here and those who were ill and members of their respective families who accompanied them to the Ormoc Superdome that day had one thing in common- hope. Each one of them hoped that they or their loved ones would be cured by the power of the Holy Spirit through the hands of the now world-renowned Father Suarez.
Hope was absolutely on my mind, too, because my mother, who has a heart condition, was among those who were waiting to be touched and healed by Father Suarez. When I asked her later regarding her experience, she said that she felt a warm and powerful force, which emanated from the hands of the famous healer, had struck her and ran downward throughout her body. At the same time, she also felt like she was on the verge of passing out as Father Suarez touched her lower jaws with both hands. Many of those touched by the healing priest fell backwards into the arms of "catchers" -people designated to stand behind the patients to catch their bodies as they fall backwards.

A family friend narrated that she had closed her eyes when the priest was still a few feet away. Suddenly she felt like she was jolted by something not unlike an electric current from the point in her forehead where Father Suarez had touched her, and ran down throughout her body.

Believe it or not, but on this particular day, the blind could see again, the hearing impaired could hear again, and many of the wheelchair-bound could walk again.

There are things in life which are unfathomable, things that simply cannot be satisfactorily explained by science. What happened here inside the Ormoc Superdome was definitely one of those things. I thank the lord for people like Father Suarez, who reinvigorates and revitalizes my attitude towards my Catholic faith.

Cheerleading - A Weekend Full of Family Fun

Last Saturday I was lucky enough to watch the cheerleading competition which was held at the PASAR auditorium. Earlier that day, PASAR Corporation kicked off its Silver Jubilee Sporstfest with a fun run. Free t-shirts and snacks were given out later to the finishers at the PASAR guesthouse. They ensured that the program of activities would make it a family fun day. Honestly, I didn't know cheerleading was this fun to watch.

For college students - How to earn while you learn

First, the bad news: You're in college, you're not a scholar, you have four or five more siblings in school and your parents are up to their necks in debt; next year there's going to be another raise in matriculation fees and your allowance barely covers your transport fare to and from school.

So, what are your options? Are you going to join a group of whiners with placards and chant slogans against the powers-that-be so they would roll back school fees?

I had made up my mind not to join our community's pilgrimage to the eight pilgrimage sites under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Palo, which was scheduled to happen on the 19th of July 2008.

Even my wife couldn't convince me to go. She had told me the week before, that Kuya Pete and Ate Jo, who by the way, are our classmates in the Marriage Encounter Community, already shouldered our fare for the trip as a gift to both of us.

In my mind, I had conjured as many reasons as I can imagine why I won't go.
Then one day before the pilgrimage, I received a call from Ate Jo.

Up to now, I still do not know how she was able to persuade me to go with them; but this I know...it's true that there are angels out there.

Pilgrimage - Our Journey to the Pilgrim Sites in Leyte

Last Saturday, July 19th, our community under the able spiritual supervision of Father Arnold Aurillo, went on a pilgrimage to various churches across the province in commemoration of the archdiocese's year-long 25th anniversary celebration.

On the 14th of February 1983, Pope John Paul II elevated the then Diocese of Palo, which comprised the whole province of Leyte, to the rank of Archdiocese by virtue of an Apostolic letter.
In the Roman Catholic Church, this means that the Diocese of Palo had become an important Diocese due to to its size and historical significance.

Our group comprised of members of the Marriage Encounter, Neo-Cathecumenate, and the Couples for Christ communities. The first place we visited was the Our Lady of Guadalupe Monastery in Brgy. Cabaon-an, Ormoc City, which is ran by Mexican nuns of the Clarisas Capuchinas Sacramentarias Order.

It rained so hard yesterday, the weather bureau said it might cause landslides.
It did cause flooding and I saw with my own eyes later in the afternoon, part of the road outside our village got slightly covered with soft earth which slid from the side of a mound.

...But I did not let it dampen my spirit, because earlier, I saw and enjoyed the view of the beauty of the jars in the morning rain.
